The end of September marked a year since I quit my day job in search of something different and without spending too much time dwelling on the changes, I’m certain that “different” is what I’ve found! I recently met with some former colleagues and after a long and lovely catch up it was impossible not to reflect on the last year. If I can pass on one piece of advice from it then it’d be to open yourself up to change, embrace what comes your way and follow the opportunities that present themselves – like me, you’ll be surprised where they might lead you!

My journey started with standup comedy and I’m pleased to say that I’m still gigging most weeks. If you’ve yet to see me in action then now would be a great time to get yourself along to a gig while I’m working on new material – my gig list can be found here and it’s looking fairly healthy. The new stuff is going down well and I recently met the legendary Barry Cryer! I asked him for his tips on staying in comedy for the long-haul and his advice was to get rejected often early in your career… so I’m looking forward to a year of rejections!

Since I last wrote to you I’ve reached a few milestones in radio, completing my 75th show, surpassing 150 hours of broadcasting and surviving my first ever full scale system breakdown! (The playout PC crashed so I had to keep talking live on air until it rebooted – TERRIFYING!)

I spent the summer earning my stripes as a chat show host, interviewing acts at Latitude Festival and Standon Calling Festival. I made full use of my first backstage press pass and shortly afterwards launched a new podcast “Now You’re Talking” where you can hear me chatting to all sorts of bands, artists, comedians and actors. It was a surreal experience interviewing some comedy icons; Tez Ilyas, Maisie Adam, Cally Beaton, Johnny Cochrane and Jonathan Pie and you can see my awkward TV debut chatting to Flamingods backstage after their set here. After July’s field experience, I conducted a live phone-in back at the studio throughout august for comedians at the Camden & Edinburgh Fringe Festivals, interviewing 23 comedians in the world’s first ever #FringePhoneIn.

I’ve now taken on hosting the weekly fixture of Phoenix FM’s film reviews with Mark Searby so you can hear me chipping in light-hearted banter and vaguely relevant comments as he reviews all the latest cinema and DVD releases. You can listen to the chat live on Phoenix FM every Friday from 1:30pm or catch up here.

My plans to become a writer have been a little overshadowed by the comedy and radio breakthroughs of late but I’m still hoping to publish a children’s story in time for Christmas this year. I’m also working on a short story and will be offering exclusive “mates rates” to everyone subscribed to my website! Plans are also afoot to co-write a few comedy sketches based on my time in radio, I’ll be sure to keep you up to date on all of the above.

In the meantime, you can catch me on the radio every Thursday and Friday afternoon 1pm-3pm and every Saturday night from 10pm on Phoenix FM. I’ll also be covering the Breakfast show for a whole week starting 28th October including the absolute honour of waking up the world at the dawn of a post-brexit apocolypse on 1st November! If you’re an early riser then tune in from 7am (yes, that is too early – I’ll be up at 5am!)

Just a quick reminder that you can enjoy all of my “on demand” radio/tv content here and that you can see a full list of my comedy gigs here all courtesy of my website – freshly revamped.

Thanks again for your support/fandom/cheerleading – you’re awesome.

Catch up soon

I’ve been a presenter on Phoenix FM for a month now, presenting One2Three every Friday afternoon. Some of you have been in touch with encouragement and a few of you have even got involved in the show. It has been fantastic having you with me on this new adventure into the world of radio and now it’s going to be a podcast too.

After every show, I’ve been putting together a clip of the “best bits” and I’m delighted that from now on this will be available to download as a podcast. There’ll be a new episode every week and you can find it by searching my name wherever you get your podcasts. I’m officially available “on demand” at any time of day!

To make it as easy as possible, I’ve included links below to my show on each of the most popular podcast services.

Apple  *  Spotify  *  Google

Anchor  *  Radio Public

Pocket Casts  *  Breaker

If you enjoy the show, please subscribe, rate and review as it would be a huge help in boosting my ratings!

You can get in touch about the show or podcast via social media or email radio@phoenixfm.com to get involved.

If you enjoy the “best bits” then you’d love the whole show! You can listen online, download the Phoenix FM app or tune in to 98FM in Essex, every Friday from 1pm-3pm.

It’s official… I’m a Radio Presenter!

newsletter, radio

In case you missed it, I took over the studio at Phoenix FM last Friday and had a proper good time. I used to spend hours as a kid creating mixtapes so I was pretty excited to have a go at the grownup equivalent.

The boss was in the studio with me to make sure that I didn’t break anything and at one point, I even got him cued up on the guest mic, live, for the most public appraisal anyone’s ever had! I was playing some belting tunes, sharing some of your most embarrassing workplace blunders and I even told some of mine. (Yeah, with my new boss in the room. Weirdest induction ever.)

Luckily, I managed to press most of the right buttons at roughly the right times and kept you all so well entertained that the boss asked me to stay on with a regular slot. So, I’m proud to be Phoenix FM’s new Friday afternoon guy! I’ll be presenting the One2Three show every Friday from 1pm-3pm.

I’ve got my own section on the Phoenix FM website where you can see my radio blogs and listen back to the audio from my first show if you missed it. I’ll keep it updated with a summary of each show, links to the stuff I’ve talked about, pictures and details of the guests I’ve interviewed.

I hope you can join me this week and every Friday afternoon from 1pm-3pm. You can listen online, download the Phoenix FM app or tune in to 98FM in Essex. If you’re listening, you can contact me via social media in all the usual ways and maybe you’ll get a mention!

Stay cool

Coming soon to a radio near you…

comedy

Back in February, I was lucky enough to have a friend in radio and popped into the Phoenix FM studios to chat with Gareth Williams on his Sunday morning breakfast show. I had a great time chatting about comedy, picking some songs and lots of lovely people got in touch to say that they enjoyed the show.

Since then, I’ve been working with the stars of Phoenix FM a little closer and even had the chance to come back to the studio for a few days. I spent some time alongside Michelle Ward, Bob Simpson, Chris Stagg and Mike Jones learning how a radio show is put together, got back behind the mic for a chat and I even had a bash at “co-hosting” Drive with Ian Leigh!

Getting to know some of the people at Phoenix FM has been great and learning the art of radio has been seriously cool. But – here’s the best bit – I’m massively excited to be JOINING THE TEAM AS A PRESENTER!

I don’t have a regular slot yet but I’m on the subs bench and covering for the first time on Friday 29th March. I’ll be in the hot seat from 1pm-3pm and you can listen online, download the Phoenix FM app or tune in to 98FM in Essex. If you’re listening, you can contact me via social media in all the usual ways and maybe you’ll get a mention!

I hope you can join me for my first radio rodeo and with any luck, I’ll be able to tell you more about a permanent fixture in the schedule soon. Keep your ears to the ground… or perhaps pointing them in the general direction of the radio might be a better plan.

Over and out.

Stewart

P.S. I’ll be adding a “Radio page” to my website where you can quickly find all the links to my latest radio-related stuff – currently under construction!

Same Guy, New Video

comedy

Exactly two months ago I posted a YouTube video of me doing my first EVER stand up comedy gig. I thought it went pretty well and to celebrate, I thought I’d share another one.

Since December, I’ve been steadily building up my stage time and crafting new material while the video casually reached over 250 people!

Now, with perfect timing to coincide with Singles Awareness Day / National Singles Day here’s a topical clip for all those still single, all those just single and all those who used to be single – me talking dating apps and date food at one of London’s best comedy clubs, Angel Comedy.

Check out my YouTube Channel – watch, like, subscribe, share and enjoy.

Also, a quick shoutout to everyone who has managed to come and see me doing a live set, your support is awesome – from laughs to drinks to sofas and breakfast!

I look forward to seeing some more of you soon, head to my gig list for upcoming dates.

So You Think You’re Funny?

comedy

In the world of stand up comedy, competitions are a pretty good way to make waves beyond the circuit and move on up the rocky road to fame and glory.

One of the most famous is “So You Think You’re Funny?” with comedians like Peter Kay, Lee Mack, Miles Jupp, Aisling Bea and Tom Allen amongst some of the previous winners. I’m buzzing to have just spoken to the producer (can’t believe I’m writing these words) and booked my place in this year’s competition!

It’ll be my biggest gig yet, performing/competing on 13th June* at Backyard Comedy Club where all the big names are a frequent face. If you’re up for a laugh then I’d love for you to came along and your support certainly won’t go unnoticed.

I’ll post more details RE tickets nearer the time but save the date… things just got real!

*date updated since original post… well done for noticing, I didn’t think anybody was reading this!
